At Hungerford Paving, we want you to be completely informed about the work that we’ll do on your property. Take a look at our process from start to finish.
Contracts And Permits
Every proposal will specify the work to be done and will include a detailed specification of what you will be getting. Be sure to carefully review your customized paving proposal/contract. When you’re ready for us to get started, you’ll need to sign one copy and send it back to our office.
After your signed contract is received, we will contact you to set up scheduling, site preparation, and paving procedures. Unsure if you need a permit? Contact your local municipal authority and they will let you know. If your parking lot or driveway is on a state route, you will need a VTrans right of way permit.
Work Schedule
About a week before our work begins at your site, we will contact you to make sure that you’ve obtained the necessary permits and to coordinate schedules. About one to two days before our planned start date, we’ll call to finalize the work plan and to let you know our estimated time of arrival.
Please be aware that bad weather can cause delays in the work being completed. If this happens, we will be sure to contact you to discuss the necessary adjustments.
- Keep the planned work area free of all vehicles and any other large or heavy objects.
- If the work area is in front of a garage door, either leave the door open or make sure it’s unlocked and easy to open from the outside.
- If you have an outside water spigot we can use, check it ahead of time to be sure the water is turned on.
Our surface preparation crew typically consists of two people, as well as a dump truck, pickup trucks, a grader, a skid steer, skid steer attachments, a vibratory roller, a vibratory plate, a cut-off saw, and other work tools and equipment.
The surface prep crew is usually on-site for a few hours to a few days, depending on the size of the job and on the weather conditions. They work to grade and compact a stone subbase to a uniform, even, consistent grade that promotes water flow away from buildings.
Existing sections of the pavement near fixed elevations such as garage floors, sidewalks, or roads may be removed or milled by this crew. For overlays, they’ll clear all existing pavement of loose materials and clean the edges. When the prep crew’s work is done, you’ll still be able to use your driveway or parking lot until the paving crew arrives, which is typically in two to five days.

Four to six people typically make up our asphalt paving crew. The equipment that will be mobilized to your project will include a dump trucks, pickup trucks, an asphalt paver, an asphalt roller, vibratory plates, hand tampers, and other tools and equipment. There will also be dump truck drivers delivering the Hot-Mix Asphalt.
This team is usually on-site for a few hours to a full day, depending on the size of the job and on the weather conditions. They’ll work to install a uniform, consistent, and smooth surface that promotes the flow of water away from buildings. If it’s an overlay project, they’ll patch the existing pavement or apply a leveling course before applying the final layer of asphalt.
After their work is done, the paving crew ropes off the end of the fresh pavement so that no one accidentally drives on it.
Asphalt Paving FAQs
How long should I stay off my new asphalt driveway?
Two days minimum, longer if feasible especially during hot weather.
Should I sealcoat the driveway?
Yes. Sealcoating will prolong the life of your driveway, but it should not be completed until one to two years after the driveway has been installed.
What are the tire scuffs on my asphalt?
Tire scuffs occur when stopped vehicles turn on new asphalt pavement. These scuffs are typically only 1/8″ deep and will wear away as time passes.
How much slope is required for water to drain off the asphalt?
The driveway grade needs to have at least 1 1/2″ of fall per 10 ft. of horizontal run. If the necessary slope can’t be achieved, additional drainage grates or catch basins will need to be installed.
